For Jeffrey

This project was created to expand on the idea of grief and the many complex emotions that come along with it. In 2020 one of my close friends suddenly passed away. During the healing process after his passing, I reminisced on past conversations we had about the afterlife. We laughed about haunting each other as sheet ghosts and being there to protect, but also annoy each other while looking like a funny caricature of a spirit. I never thought about the idea of one of us passing being a reality, especially being that we were barely 20 years old.

The moments during my everyday routines I would be reminded of him. Small, unrelated tasks would send me into the past- to being back with him and all my other friends- which would, of course, remind me that they are no longer occupying physical space in this world. I couldn't imagine them just being busy and that's why I couldn't reach out and talk to them. They were just gone.

This series is a representation of those moments when I'm caught in that cog of remembrance and realization. When my mundane routine is greeted by the memory of my sweet friend and our conversations of being haunted by him in the form of a cartoonish sheet ghost.

The photographs are digital and were shot using gel lighting techniques. The images were photoshopped to have the color blocking seen in the images. I wanted to represent the plane of reality and imagination with separate colors, but also to play with the balance of the dramatic tone of the project and the whimsy nature of the sheet ghost conversation.
